How often you should clean your boat depends on a number of things, such as where it is stored and how often you use it. If you use your boat in freshwater on a regular basis (3 – 5 times a week), then cleaning your boat every 2 weeks in recommended.
However, if you are using your boat in salt water, it is highly recommended to clean your boat after every ride. This is because the salt particles in the water can cause corrosion and damage your boat. On the other hand, if your boat is not being currently used and is kept out of water, in closed storage, it doesn’t need to be cleaned.
However, anything that can stain your boats paint – such as bird droppings, salt spray and tree sap – should be washed off instantly. As if left in the direct sunlight, these elements can quickly become a permanent issue.
It is not only the appearance of your boat which is important, there can be serious issues if you don’t clean your boat. When boat engines intake water, they can suck in dirt, weeds and more. If any of those things gets stuck inside the engine they create problems.
The short answer is yes, you should wax your boat every 3 – 4 months to keep it in the best condition possible.
The hull of your boat is susceptible to water, the sun and other elements, and it is the largest area of your boat. Waxing protects against many things, and keeps your boat looking it’s best. Protection from UV light, corrosion from salt, water weathering, as well as build-ups on the bottom of the boat from underneath the water surface.
Boat ownership is 80% maintenance and unfortunately, many people either do not have the time to invest in cleaning their boat, or reside away from the location of their boat. As well as this, there are many layers to cleaning a boat, and without the experience and knowledge, you can end up causing more damage to your boat in the long run.
Using a boat cleaning service, such as Boat Valet, lets you leave the upkeep of your boat in the hands of professionals you can trust. Providing your boat with the showroom look all year round, while still freeing up more of your own time to spend enjoying your boat out on the water.
The length of time the boat cleaning and protection effects will last depends on the products used, how frequently you use your boat, and how you maintain it. Our experience to date is that the cleaned gel coat, with a protective layer, should remain clean and bright in appearance for at least a season.
Your boat should be protected from the elements for up to 12 months when a gel coat protection layer is used. However, it is recommended to reapply 2 coats annually for full protection, and to maintain the shiny appearance.
